Black Friday Sales Come For Us All...even in Portugal!

As expats move to Portugal over the years, certain American customs and traditions have also migrated to the Iberian Peninsula, and the Portuguese have run with them, Black Friday being one of the most popular.

When I first moved to Portugal, a kindly Portuguese purveyor of a shop said to me to make the most of the country’s two biggest sales, during the end of summer and then during Black Friday.

Prices fall sharply during these two weeks’ long events and many plan their shopping for these times.

Of course, Black Friday has become synonymous with enormous sales

Of course, Black Friday has become synonymous with enormous sales, usually the biggest promotions of products and services of the year globally.

What began as a custom of Americans celebrating thankfulness with a four-day weekend and Thursday off at the tail-end of November became a Black Friday bonanza of people shopping for the holidays with the biggest sales, putting stores and businesses that may not have been profitable – and in the red – into the black – the profit – with gargantuan sales numbers.

So, like the pumpkin spice madness that started at Starbucks to celebrate the Thanksgiving pumpkin pie tradition and then, through so much coffee!, expanded to October and September (and sometimes even in August now, heaven help us), the Black Friday connotation has been transformed.

Portugal loves a good sale – I mean, who doesn’t?

And as the US Black Friday sale grew from Friday to Cyber Monday (for online orders on sale) and then grew again to Pre-Black Friday promotions all the week before, and sometimes after, Thanksgiving, so too did the Portuguese evolve their giant sale season.

We go BIG in Portugal!

How I love it.

What is known as Black Friday, Black November, and even the Black Days takes over every storefront and a plethora of businesses, local and corporate, throughout Portugal.

Thanksgiving is kind of, er, skipped over here – I do not blame them – but the joy, the terror, the anxiety, and the crazy amount of endorphins that emerge from purchasing something and then getting a great deal on it on ‘Black Friday’ is the sweet spot of the Black Days.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday here – though American expats often celebrate Turkey Day together – but the joy, the terror, the anxiety, and the crazy amount of endorphins that emerge fr om purchasing something and then getting a great deal on it on ‘Black Friday’ is the sweet spot of the Black Days.

And they do not skimp!
